I was constantly in awe of the green and snowy mountains, the rivers and the heat! I was sad to leave. The kayaking was epic, challenging to say the least...

God I'm so tired. We paddled from 11am till about 5 something. My back is in bits, my fingers and nose are sore, even my hair hurts. It was great fun though. Being one of the (um) less amazing paddlers there I learned a lot! I hope someone took photos. In the absence of any cool ones to put up myself, I'll share this with you....

The Dargle kicked my ass yesterday.
The River Dargle (Irish: An Deargail, meaning little red spot) rises in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland on the northern slopes of Djouce Mountain and flows over the highest waterfall in Ireland, falling 121m (398 feet) at Powerscourt Waterfall.
Needless to say, we did NOT paddle the Powerscourt section, rather the bit after the falls that starts out nice and friendly then ends up teaching me a lesson or two. Admittedly I was not on form yesterday but it's no excuse. Bring on a rematch. (once my poor bruised knuckles (and ego) heal.)

Wow, time flies when you're having all of the fun!! The first half of my college year has just rocketed by. Tomorrow is the last day of class (and the Xmas Student Social).

We've been working on a big project that encompasses all of the aspects of the course: photography, painting, drawing, design, metal work and multimedia. I've been doing my whole project on birds; crows and chickens so far with the occasional seagull thrown in for good measure. Someone once told me that birds are bad luck but I say hooey to that. I love birds! They're so graceful and mischievous at the same time. We have crows and seagulls in the backyard who don't get along. It's our own little ornithological soap opera.

Paddy and I are just back from Tiperary and Limerick where we paddled the Clare Glens, arguably the prettiest and most fun river in Ireland. It's a series of rapids and 'pool drop' waterfalls which vary in size but all seem big from the top. Here's me at the lip of the one called the Big Eas (pronounced, appropriately BIG ASS!!) which is a 15 foot drop. Fun Stuff!

Wow, i've been a slacker lately. Only on this blog though.... I've been busy over on my Angel She's A Killer website...
So what is new?? Loads and Loads! But where to start... At the beginning I guess. My trip to Canada with Paddy and the boats. It was brilliant. The weather was great, hanging out with Dad and Jesse and Grandma was excellent and the kayaking was epic. EPIC.
Plus we got some A&W.

I wish we had photos of the Ottawa river, it was such a brilliant place to kayak. The part of the 600 mile river that we went to was pretty remote, and the man who owns most of the land up there intends to keep it that way. I've never seen anything like it in my life. There was, to put it simply, so much water. The rapids were massive and the waves were mammoth: our 4 days spent there were far too short.

Paddy and I are off to sunny Canadia on sunday with boats in tow for some summer fun!!
We're going to head up to the cottage, I can't wait, I haven't been there in the summer for years!! We're also going to make the trek up to the Ottawa River for some kayaking. With waves named Buseater and Garberator (a garbage disposal! eep) I'm a bit nervous. It'll be funzo though.

The other day I bought a new little plant for No 2's bowl (in case you've forgotten, No 2 is my killer goldfish)
I put it in the bowl, it was a bit tall but I thought nothing of it. A few hours later Paddy walked into the sitting room to find No 2 on the floor. I think he got up on the plant and jumped out. It was so sad, I cried like a mad fool. We wrapped him up in a little rag and I thought about burying him under my new little apple tree. After a few minutes I snuck a last forlorn look at my orange pal, AND HE WAS ALIVE!! He'd been out of the tank for ages and ages. What a little trooper. I put him back in, put the evil new plant in the composter, and all is well in fishland once more.
I love you No 2.

In case you need reminding about the previous saga...Annamoe. Pt.3I have kicked Jacksons ass. Not until the Annamoe kicked my ass for 2 days though. I escaped, bruised, and with a new bump on the nose, but happy and UPRIGHT after paddling like the dickens through Jacksons falls. I was so happy when I got to the bottom I couldn't contain myself: there may or maynot have been little tears of joy. I can't WAIT to try again....

I have a new car car. She's not new, but she's new to me. In the trend that I began in my youth, she is a wagon, and looks like the vehicle driven by a soccer mom.

Nonetheless she is loved and will be well looked after.
She wont be driven though, gas is too expensive.
The car is to celebrate being a fully licensed driver.

In a move that was good for the soul and bad for the wallet, I quit my day job after 7 years. It was time to make time I suppose! I’m done this week, eep! But as one door shuts, many many open. I’m very excited about all the possibilities! Firstly the blog drought will be over (i hope), and I can finally dedicate some serious hours to Angel, my patient little project who deserves so much more!

So, the second night of our weekly soundcheck (july the tenth) will be my leaving do - my celebration of having my first summer off in 14 years. But do come to the first one as well this thursday (july the third).

In fact come to all of them. They are going to be fun fun fun.
(there may or may not be pigs and robots in attendance.)

The other day Dad and I saw a sundog when we were driving... My photo didn't capture it as well as I'd hoped. It was COOL!

These appear when the sun is low in the sky and its rays catch the thin vapour formed of ice crystals which lies in the atmosphere six miles above the Earth's surface.

The rays are refracted by the crystals to produce what looks like a halo round the sun.

Sometimes, as here, they display a spectrum of colours from red closest to the sun to a pale blue furthest from it, which has led to them being mistaken for full circle rainbows.

In centuries past, they were thought of as signs of ill omen. These days they are most often mistaken for UFOs.

greetings from the big freeze! What a bonkers easter! It's so snowy and cold. It's great to be home though. I've been hanging out in the Shwa with Dad, Grandma and Grandpa for the week but last night, in honor of Good Friday, Jesse (little big sis) and I set out into Dakota to celebrate the holiday with style! This is definitely my favorite bar anywhere, and apparently it's other people fave too. It was packed! And with good reason, Jud and the boys were playing. If you haven't seem them yet, please make a point of seeing The Beauties (haunted hollerin' country). Brilliant stuff!

I've finally mastered the eskimo roll in my kayak. It wasn't looking good for a long time. I tried it every time Paddy and I went paddling with no luck. I even went to a double pool session (2 full hours of roll practice) and didn't get it. I wont lie to you, there were tears. It's very hard! For weeks I had rolling dreams.
THEN, in pool session no.2 I got it! I was wearing goggles and the first time I got myself up and it had me bawling with joy, filling my goggles with happy little tears!
AND I've done it 4 (four) times on a real river.
Yes, I rock.

I've joined the Dublin Orchestral Players playing the upright bass! I have taken ONE lesson and am entirely new at playing. It's not different in essence to the electric bass, the strings and notes are all the same, it's the bowing that's the thorn in my side. It's cat hard to play, and the sound of me practicing is akin to the wails of tortured small animals. It's going to sound bad bad bad before it starts sounding good! (I'm slowly but surely getting better though!)
We're doing a concert March 1st at St. Jude's Church in Templeogue.
When I bought the bass it was setup all arseways. the action was very high and it actually hurt to play with the strings so far away from the fretboard. Rather than cart her all over town and pay a small fortune in repairs, I consulted the interweb and set about doing it myself. It was a bit terrifying, I didn't want to destroy the thing, but it was ultimately rewarding in the end (and turned out to be pretty easy). Not only did I fix it, I fixed it well. Go me!

The Annamoe Pt. 2

Last weekend we went back to the Annamoe kayaking. There was WAY more water this time and we did a much longer run. We started at Lough Dan near Roundwood. It was an extra 4km or so of grade III paddling. This week I didn't fare as well. Despite repetitive warnings to avoid the overhanging trees, I managed to get stuck in EVERY SINGLE ONE! It was so annoying (and dangerous). Plus I made a balls of one rapid (twice) and ended up swimming (twice) in a gross foamy pile of foamy foam. I managed a few cuts and scrapes, I mangled my knuckles, twisted my ankle, and bruised my EYEBALL! But it was still brilliant fun, and Paddy says that when I was actually paddling, I did it well.
I can't wait till next Sunday!

THE BAKE

It started as an accident. It was actually supposed to be cookies. I think I was indulging in the romantic notion that a glass of wine accompanies all enjoyable kitchen endeavors. It would be irresponsible of me to solely blame the wine, I am a desperate cook. I distrust recipes, substitute ingredients recklessly, and have the attention span of a crow. Without exception, every time I add any spice to ANYTHING, the smoke alarm goes off.
I have perfected two things despite my culinary shortcomings.
1. Frozen grapes (haha)
2. The BAKE!
The bake has 3 essential ingredients.
WET
DRY
TASTY
The rest is up to your imagination.
For WET I use soya milk, or juice, or green tea, or water or a mix of everything. You can really use anything you want. Seriously.
For DRY I use oats, and musli. I've added bran flakes before. I can't eat wheat but if you can I suppose any sort of cerealy thing will work.
TASTY is the fun part. Use almonds, dried fruit (not fresh fruit it goes all rotty and gross), nuts, cinnamon, ginger, peanut butter, maple syrup ANYTHING YOU WANT. Don't use sugar though, the white devil isn't welcome here.
Mix it up, stick it in a loaf tin with a bit of olive oil to avoid the dreaded stick.

Then oven it up. At 220 for about 20 min to half an hour depending on how crap your oven is. mine takes about 40 min.
Beware, it's good for you.
I love the bake.

Jackson's Falls

Check out the rapid I ran on sunday!! Paddy took me to the Annamoe river in Wicklow with a few of his kayak cronies. Paddy, Peaches, Maddog and Jenny are all great paddlers so I was in good hands. It's a grade 3 river with a grade 4+ rapid near the end called Jackson's Falls. I'd heard of it. It's sort of a rite of passage among paddlers. I went with every intention of walking around the rapid, but on the day decided to go for it. What's the worst that could happen? (don't answer that!!)
I made an absolute balls of it, spent half the time upside down, but it was SOOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!!! Even getting hauled out of the bottom pool by Peaches on a rope was brilliant. I can't stop smiling today. I'm covered in bruises but I'm so chuffed.

comedy clash

Last week was a comedy war of the highest order, Dara O'Brein, one of my all time favorites, VS. David O'Doherty, a worthy adversary. It was a tough competition to be sure, there were serious fits and giggles to be had. I have to say though, D Oh D kicked Dara's ass quite royally. He was so funny. SOOOOOOOO funny. He summed up 31yearoldhood perfectly, and made musical comedy quite bearable, enjoyable even. (that doesn't mean ANYONE else is allowed to do it.) Plus he likes pirates, sharks and scrambled eggs. Sweet.

I've quit drinking diet coke for a variety of reasons. In an effort to purge my vices, and in the spirit of ageing and wisening (is that even a word....), this is one of the last ones on the chopping block. It's a hard one though.
I love diet coke for so many reasons, and hate it for twice as many. It's addictive, and it hurts my teeth, so it's gone.
I'll miss the burps most of all....

I did this one last week, it took forever but in the end I wasn't completely happy with it. I like the idea but the final product didn't quite live up somehow... I still have the plates so I can always try it again.

This full moon had everyone acting like a bunch of loons. (myself included)
I went home the other night full of red wine and spent an hour playing Sims, slapping everyone (virtually of course) that I could find. It was great. Then I ate a box of cadbury roses.

In the spirit of ageing, as my 30th year draws to a close, I decided (albeit in-advisedly) to do some adult-y stuff. I changed my gothy blue-black locks to a respectable BROWN and I invested in some anti-eye-wrinkle cream nonsense. Sadly, BROWN dye looks exactly the same as black, and dyes the face almost as perminantly as it does the hair. And I'm allergic to the eye cream. When does it all get easier?

Last night we did dry point etching which involves pointy tools and drawing. I was testing out the difference between simple and more detailed drawings with my little butterflies. The preparation of the plate was very time consuming so I only made one print in this weeks class. I enjoyed it though, despite all the tools being squeaky AND despite spilling a jar of solvent on my shoe.

I was reminded of the trip Paddy and I took to the butterfly farm in Ovidstown near Straffan. It's a great place... in the first bit you get to look at all sorts of (dead-zo) butterflies in glass cases, preserved and beautiful. There are also some glass cages with live bugs, giant snails, praying mantises, stick insects and assorted spidery badness. The main attraction however is the butterfly room, a heated sanctuary full of water features, tropical foliage and LIVE butterflies buzzing about. It was wonderful but ultimately terrifying. It sounds silly but it was scary!! They swoop, and sometimes land on you, they're quite menacing really.

But anyway, I love my class. It's wonderful being creative again, and I've renewed my love of working with my hands. my teacher is amazing as well. She has a gentle and lovely way about her, and above all she wants everyone to learn at their own pace and explore their own interests. I found her bio on the interweb along with a few of her prints....

She is a member of the Black Church Print Studio where she works as a full time printmaker. Whilst showing off my architectural knowledge to my Canuck pal Mike Kickass I came across the new Daniel Libeskind addition to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM to you and me). It's pretty sexy. I can't wait to see it in all it's glory.

even better than the last... We got to use LOADS of colors. Currently my hands resemble a certian broadway raincoat! This time I brought gloves to protect my fingers. Unfortunately however, when latex encounters whatever wonderfulness we use to make ink go away, it GROWS. I've never seen anything like it. Within 2 minutes I had giantitus of the gloves, then the fingers started falling off. I made a zombie hand joke but no-one laughed. Tough crowd.

My first night was fun, AND I dyed my hands blue which is always a bonus. I love my class. It's going to be all about etching and printmaking. I don't have my work to put up, apparently the ink takes an eon to dry, so instead I found some nice and lovely etchings for your viewing pleasure.

Tonight is my first night back in school. I'm mildly nervous in a ferociously petrified kind of way. I graduated University 85 years ago and my memories of the experience still smell slightly dampish. This is different though I suppose; I'm going back because I WANT to. And it's art school. And it's only part time. Plus I have a new pencil case.

Halloween

Rob Zombie is a legend. The new Halloween scared the pumpkins out of me. It was sufficiently creepy, not overly gorey or full of OTT killings, and a scary kid always freaks me out. PLUS Michael Myers is one of the best villians going. (And Sheri Moon Zombie is a babe.) I love a good horror movie.

We survived it, just barely. I might have Weills disease, Paddy is conviced he was bitten by rats, we were both SAVAGED by every pointy or nettley plant in existance and our noble vessel SANK but we're still here.
It was an adventure to say the least. It's really a shame our boat was so crap, we were kicking serious ass at the beginning of the race. We were in the top ten for the first five miles or so. I think we split the front on the first major weir, then sank steadily through the jungle. We kept trucking though and made it 7 miles before the holes in the fiberglass were as big as houses.
(I was very brave. There were spiders AND swans.)

But that's ok, I get to update my blog. AND House is on TV tomorrow night. Oh the joy!!
It's been way too long, I don't even know where to start. Since July I've moved house, became a boat owner, done LOTS of surfing, and become a student (eek!!)

MY NEW HOUSE!!!
I've moved out of the killer apartment with the seaviews into a very VERY nice house!! The apartment was great, the management company wasn't. They were rather fond of written warnings and inspections, not that we were bad tenants at all, we just kept commiting heinous indescretions like TALKING and using the elevator. I think we laughed one day with the window open. Oh the shame!!! When we heard that our landlord wanted to move back in we were MORE than happy to go house hunting. The new house is a polar-opposite living experience. It's relaxed in a sortof seaside-hostel kind of way. It's fantastic. We have a front and back garden, our scarecrow Earl is finally where he belongs!!

It's great, a stones throw from the sea, around the corner from Cavistons (home of the best fish and Pate in the known world) and there's loads of cats in the neighborhood to borrow for the afternoon. I had a great chat with a big fatso white cat this morning when I was hanging out the laundry. He's quite a looker.

Paddy and I went to gorgeous Edinburgh for our anniversary festivities. The poor noodle had never been to Scotland. It's so wonderful there, even when it's miserable and rainy and FREEZING like it was this week.
We did some serious relaxing, some Uber-tourist stuff, and most importantly searched for (and found) the best Haggis in the city. Sadly my camera died on the way to the airport. Boo.
To all my camera expert friends.... it started doing this...
